Three kids, five cats, a dog, green house, vegetable garden, shrubbery and countless flower beds are obviously not enough. We decided to get two bee hives and two packages of New Zealand bees from Scandia Honey Company. They are in the orchard - from time to time we will be posting pictures and updates here on how the bees are doing…
Honey bees
Arrival Day
Installing the bee packages into the hives was much easier than we expected. I do not know how many videos we watched on YouTube, how many articles we found on the Internet on the topic - and at the end it was easy and painless. We poured the bees in, they sank between the frames, little buzzing around, and we closed the lids…
It was two weeks later when we opened the lids to look inside the hives to make sure the queen is laying eggs and the workers are bringing in pollen…
It will be another two weeks before we open the hives again to have another look - and then I will be taking some more photos of what is happening inside.
Busy Bees
Our bees are hard at work collecting pollen and nectar for their honey. During spring our garden is full of blooming flowers and the buzzing of the bees.
Our wild fuzzy friends are enjoying the lilacs
The moment has come to extract some honey. 30kg of it from one of the hives, to be exact. It’s a sticky business, but sooo sweet!
Now we are starting to prepare for the winter...
